About Musa Abalulesa

Before this high-elevation plot of land was used to farm coffee, it served as a hideout for Musa Abalulesa’s father who was bravely resisting a brutal military regime. He was targeted by that regime and died as a wanted man. Many years later, under an amnesty and reconciliation program, the current government granted this land to the family and his three sons now grow coffee. Talk about a storied piece of land!

But, of course, the story doesn’t end there. In 2006, Musa won a national competition and won a trip to the African Fine Coffee Association to expand his specialty coffee knowledge plus a hand coffee pulper and a cash prize, which he used to expand his farm But, just two years later, the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange was established, which ended direct export, meaning he had to sell locally at commercial (lower) prices.

BUT! The story doesn’t end there! A handful of years later in 2016, an export liberation allowed certain farmers to obtain their own export license, allowing Musa to directly sell his coffee to green coffee buyers, meaning he can sell his coffee for higher (and very justified!) prices. Alongside his coffee, Musa also grows avocados and keeps honey bees to diversify his income during the coffee off-season. And if that wasn’t enough already, Musa and his brother Mustefa operate a seed production business, where they supply seeds to local government seed banks.

All the parts of this story culminate in a beautiful cup of coffee, one that tastes bright, fresh, and deliciously creamy. Each sip is full of flavor that’s enhanced by the incredible history it came from.

Frequently asked questions

We ship almost all orders same or next day, Monday-Friday. We ship via USPS and typically orders take 2-5 days arrive. (But, as you may know, once we drop your package off, shipping times are out of our control.)

The coffee is usually roasted within one business day (Monday-Friday) of shipment. We recommend waiting at least 3-4 days after the roasting date before brewing. (And we think the sweet spot is around 2 weeks!)

All our coffees will be somewhere in the vicinity of a light to medium roast.

The way we approach roasting coffees is called 'profile roasting' meaning that we create a unique roasting profile for each coffee based on the characteristics of each bean (density, size, moisture level within the bean, etc) and how it reacts while roasting so that we can get what we believe to be the best expression possible for each of our coffees!

Espresso is one of the most detail oriented brew methods which makes pre-grinding for espresso quite tricky. Each home espresso machine is different (pressure, temperatures, basket size, etc.) making it difficult to choose a grind setting that will work for you. (Plus, things like bean density, how warm your grinder is, and more can effect the finicky nature of espresso. Even in our cafes, we’re constantly making tweaks to our espresso grind throughout the day!) Also, we don’t have a specific espresso grinder to be able to grind a bulk amount of coffee at once. We only have a drip coffee specific grinder for bulk grinding.

This is all to say, grinding your coffee on a home espresso grinder prior to brewing will produce the most tasty shot of espresso! We’re rooting for you to have the best version of our coffee as possible. If you need a grinder recommendation, please don’t hesitate to reach out to hello@crema-coffee.com.

If you would still like for us to pre-grind for an espresso machine, let us know in the order notes. We’ll use our best guess at a grind setting, but please keep in mind that we do not offer refunds on any type of coffee.

Lucky for you, any of our coffees can be brewed as espresso!

We aim to roast our coffee so that it tastes great in a variety of brew methods. (Fun fact: espresso is a brew method, not a type of coffee bean!)

If one of our offerings sounds good to you, we bet you’ll like it on espresso too! But, we always like to suggest Tres Banderas as a starting point for espresso.

No, most of our coffees aren’t ‘certified’ organic. But!! That doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not grown using organic processes. For many of the farms/mills that we purchase coffee from, the cost of the certification could put them out of business — new and separate equipment, cost of application process, the time spent going through certification (multiple years), etc. You can read more on the topic in our blog post here.

We are not officially fair trade certified and typically do not purchase Fair Trade certified coffees. We believe the system is a good one, and has helped many farmers and families earn a better living, however, one thing it does not address well is quality of product, and we typically pay much higher prices for higher quality.

Fair trade usually offers farmers a small premium (about $.40) on top of whatever the current market price for coffee is. We either work directly with producers or importers that already pay well above Fair Trade prices for high quality coffees. We pay top prices for great coffees regardless of any certification. Please feel free toreach out to us if you have any other questions regarding our buying practices.
