About Teshome Gemechu

Along the eastern edge of the Ethiopian Highlands in the Gedeo Zone of Ethiopia sits the tiny hamlet of Chelbesa — home of the Teshome Gemechu Washing Station. Smallholder farmers in Gedeo bring their freshly picked coffee to this washing station for processing.

These small farms fall into two different categories: garden and semi-forest. In garden conditions, the farms are close to the farmer’s home and the land is cultivated for coffee growing. The farmers tending to coffee plants in semi-forest conditions are pruning and tending to wild or naturally growing coffee trees in a forest-like area.

Washing stations and coffee mills that are set up to accommodate many very small lots provide opportunities for these farmers to sell their coffee in the specialty market, which means they are getting paid a higher price per pound for their coffee. These washing stations also invest in education for their farmers with access to state-of-the-art facilities and training in processing and cleaning methods.

All of these expertly grown and harvested coffees from Teshome Gemechu come together to bring an ultra-sweet, fruit-forward final cup. We taste ripe, juicy peach accentuated with the mild, sweet acidity of tangerine and the richness of brown sugar. We love how this coffee brews up hot in the Chemex and it’s also fantastic iced. Try it both ways and experience all this beautiful Ethiopian coffee has to offer.

Brewing Recommendation

While we strive to roast our coffees to be enjoyable using any brewing method,  we love the clarity that brewing with a Chemex brings. Try it hot or iced!

Chemex Brewing Ratio - 1:16 [i.e. 25g coffee : 400g water]

Iced Chemex Brewing Ratio -  1:6.6:13.2 [i.e. 60 g coffee, 425 g ice, 850 g water]
