Finca Cerro Azul Gesha: Gesha Claus is Real

Gesha Claus is coming to town. And he’s bringing whatever the opposite of coal is.

CREMA has received an early Christmas present from our friends at the Finca Cerro Azul farm in Colombia–a delicious Heirloom Gesha varietal–and we are positively jolly to share it with you.

When last year’s Christmas lists were still crumpled in recycling, Roaster and Green Buyer Sean Stewart journeyed to the town of Trujillo, near the west coast of Colombia. Sean spent five days with Rigoberto Herrera Correa and his team at Cafe Granja La Esperanza, visiting several of their farms throughout the Valle del Cauca region of Colombia. A highlight of Sean’s journey was his visit to Finca Cerro Azul, where he walked among the farm’s 30,000 Gesha trees (the farm’s only varietal), handpicking the ripe coffee cherries, and eating them right off the tree.

Ranging from 1,600 to 2,000 feet above sea level, Cerro Azul features state-of-the-art climate-tracking equipment, able to provide farmers with detailed information about wind, rainfall, sun and shade, and temperature. The farm’s peak is outfitted with a row of pine trees to break the wind, allowing even the higher-elevation lots on the farm to be harvested throughout the year.

The crop that jingled all the way to CREMA grew in the high reaches of Cerro Azul–anywhere from 1,700-1,900 feet above sea level.

The Gesha varietal, native to Ethiopia and cherished for its dazzling clarity and exceptional fruitiness, seizes its vast potential in the trees of Colombia. The marriage of varietal (Ethiopia) and terroir (Colombia), allows this crop to possess the Gesha’s signature cleanliness and fruit, while also displaying a creamy, caramel body unique to the Colombian soil. Uniting the two–crisp fruit and malty toffee–yields a remarkably distinct cup. Sweet lemongrass swirls with a deep guava acidity, and finishes with a creamy chocolate malt.

Our growing relationship with Rigoberto and Cafe Granja La Esperanza has allowed CREMA to serve three outstanding coffees: Yellow Bourbon, La Cristalina, and the Las Margaritas Gesha. And we are proud to serve another one.

The Cerro Azul Gesha is now available at CREMA. We’d recommend it as a stocking stuffer, but there’s no sense in waiting around: c’mon into the shop, and stuff this coffee right into your mouth.
